Rawlings-Moore Case

Return Day for City Court
Numerous Suits Filed for the March Term

The sheriff and deputies face a tight deadline of just three days to serve papers across the county.

(From Tuesday’s Daily)
Today marks return day for the city court, and a large number of suits are being filed. Most of these are suits on account and involve parties from various parts of the county. By noon today, between 40 and 50 cases had already been filed, with more expected to follow.

Due to the illness of R.B. Myddleton, clerk of the city court, his brother, Ralph, has temporarily taken charge of the office’s affairs.

The law requires these suits to be served at least 15 days before the court session begins, leaving the sheriff and his deputies with only three days to serve papers to defendants. With defendants scattered across the county and potentially difficult to locate, the officials have their hands full completing the work within the allotted time.

Notable Cases Filed Today

  • Sharper Hall v. Henry Boyd: This damages suit seeks $500, alleging that the defendant caused losses to the plaintiff due to a mill dam that Boyd erected.
  • Harley Hardware Company v. J.G. Rawlings: The suit involves $375 and seeks to clarify records and deliver property secured by the plaintiff in Coffee County.

Upcoming Court Term
The regular term for the city court begins on the first Monday in March. Early indications suggest it will be a particularly busy session.
